Description
Frank Turner is one of my favorite artists, and when he asked his fans to make fanart... I couldn't resist.
This picture is based on a picture of Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis, a Dutch anarchist from the late 19th and early 20th century. In the original picture Nieuwenhuis stands in a robe, fighting the waves. Anarchy and the sea have been recurring themes in Frank's music, so I thought of it as fitting.
Frank is depicted in this picture as the Fisher King himself, with his castle far away in the background. His guitar ends in a fishing rod, combining his profession as an artist with the theme.
I noted very early in the process that I made Frank hold his guitar the wrong way in the picture. I considered flipping the image in order for the hands to be right, but it just looked off when after I did that...
Frank himself is drawn with pencil and traced over with a dip pen and ink.
The sea is painted with ink and a brush.
The sky was made with 'biester', some sort of powder I still don't know the English word for.
Some progression pictures:
First pencil lines: [link]
Detailing the face: [link]
Drawing the waves: [link]
Adding the sky: [link]
